If you grew up in a cold-weather climate, you understand the feeling that comes in the first days of spring. For months, you’ve grown accustomed to the dark, the stinging winds, the cold.
But then spring comes and the sun rises. The ice melts and recedes, loosening its grip on the earth. The grass wakes up and streches upward. The warmth returns, and along with it, excitement and energy.
There’s not a sensation like it.
It’s like how God describes the day when evil will finally give way to good. Evil melts away. The believer is freed, feeling like a calf leaping from barn to pasture for the first time in months. The forces that once were so destructive are like ash under the foot of a believer, like soft melting ice.
“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty."
- Malachi 4:1-6
Sovereign Lord, So often evil seems to restrict, oppress, and crush the good in this world. Set our hearts on the day when evil will be trampled and we will be refreshed and set free. Amen.
