Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
— 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Have you ever been identified by a sin you've committed? E.g. 'The greedy guy,' 'The gossip,' 'the cheater,' and so on.
If so, you probably know how just how much weight an identity can carry, how significant it is.
This good news of Jesus is simple, yet profound: in Jesus and through your baptism, you are not your sins. Whatever we might have been (or been guilty of), in Christ, it have been washed away. Christ has given us a new identity, a new way of seeing ourselves and seeing others.
Lord Jesus, as we begin each day, bring us back to our baptism, that we might remember who you made us to be: holy and pure, God's children. Amen.
