Good News, Not Good Advice

How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
           who proclaim peace,
           who bring good tidings,
           who proclaim salvation,
           who say to Zion,
           “Your God reigns!”
- Isaiah 52:7

Change one word, and it all falls apart. Imagine Isaiah writing this: "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good... advice." It really doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

Good advice is often helpful, but seldom what we're looking for. Often, when we find ourselves in a bad situation, we already know what we have to do or what we should've done. And having someone dress up common sense in cute and clever language doesn't help.

What we do need is good news. And what we get at Christmas is good news. The substitute has come! Our God reigns! The Messiah brings peace between us and God! Your sins are covered over!

Holy Spirit, you work in our hearts to guide our actions and help us lead godly lives, yet you also work in us faith. You help fix our eyes on Jesus rather than ourselves. Help us, in whatever circumstances we find ourselves, to fix our eyes on Jesus, the one who came to bring us good news. Amen.
